Foundation
We provide expert instruction, high expectations, incredible curriculum, and top of the line practice helps for at-home practice to encourage our students to build a firm foundation. Because of the unique nature of our group classes, we are able to spend time each week on technique, ear training, theory and composition, all of which are reinforced with the at-home practice tools. Before students advance a level, they meet one-on-one with their instructor for a private evaluation and new-skills tutorial to prep them for their next level.
Creativity
Creativity requires tools. The creation of a painting requires paint brushes and paint. Likewise, for musicians, creativity necessitates theoretical knowledge and technical skills. From the moment our students begin collecting their set of tools, we give time in our classes to use them in creative ways. At first, it doesn’t sound like much, but as they perform their mini compositions for their classmates, they gain confidence in their creative abilities and develop into well-rounded musicians not tethered to only playing others’ compositions.
Joy
At Poco a Poco Music Studios, we love to celebrate! When students pass off a song in class, they get to ring a bell, and the whole class takes a second to cheer for them. We love to play for each other. At least twice a week, the students will play short pieces for one another. You’ll find more cheering after that. When a student completes a book, the class takes a moment to shake the advancing students hand and congratulate them.
In addition to this, we truly believe that as musicians build skills with which they can play beautifully and create from their soul, they will find joy in their music. We hope they will go forward to share that joy with their families and communities in big and small ways.

Joy
At Poco a Poco, we’re okay taking things a little slow at first to ensure each student builds a strong and solid foundation. When that foundation develops first, students find that their future progress moves uninhibited by bad habits and undeveloped skills.
We encourage creativity – teaching improv from the first day of class – using whatever skills they’ve developed. This creates a freedom at the piano from the very beginning – reinforcing a belief in their own creative genius, not just that of Mozart, Beethoven and Ellington.
As strong foundation and creative freedom merge together, we believe our students develop a life long love for music that will bring joy and respite to their lives, whether they are a concert pianist, an architect, or a math teacher.
